Paid Directory Listings Program

December 14, 2009

Directory Listings are a good way to promote your website and while there are 1000s of free (or reciprocal link) directories, our recommendation is to focus on obtaining directory listings from the best directories.   The only downside to this strategy is that the best directories require payment for inclusion.

To get started, we recommend starting with the following 4 directories:

  1. Yahoo! Directory -  Annual Cost $299botw-sq
  2. Best of the Web – Annual Cost $149
  3. Business.com – Annual Cost $299
  4. Go Guides One Time $69

There are lots of websites that rank all of the Paid Directories that are available:

Based on our experience with specific Paid Directories, we recommend establishing a $250 budget (we spend approximately $150 on actual submission fees and charge $100/month for processing) for an extended period of time and slowly submitting to a combination of General, Industry, Niche, and Location based Directories based on your specific business or website profile.

For this extended submission process, we primarily promote your primary domain name (www.domain.com recommended) using a variety of different anchor text to support targeted keywords.  If requested, we can also support individual pages on your website in place of the primary domain or even promote individual pages only.  During this process, we will also attempt to locate and submit to very specialized directories that are usually more relevant than the general directories.

A Paid Directory Listing strategy is a great addition to your Online PR campaign, but we encourage this type of activity as an additional link building activity.  You don’t want to rely on just one method for a link building strategy.

Our Link Building Campaigns cover social bookmarking, article marketing, and blog post syndication and can be combine with Paid Directory Listings or other forms of Online PR like Press Release Submissions, Web 2.0 Content, or Social Profile Marketing.

Google Search Adds Twitter

Google Search Adds Twitter – What It Means for Business

Twitter has become a social networking phenomenon. This stream of consciousness type media outlet is followed religiously by millions on a minute by minute basis, which makes it an exciting new source of real time information. Google saw the potential to provide searchers with another form of search information that is more up to date and can be better targeted to their keywords than traditional search links. Google announced that they would be adding Twitter to their regular search pages on October 21, 2009 at the Web 2.0 summit. The addition of Twitter “tweets” to search results is predicted to influence businesses in several different ways.

Twitter

One direct impact on Twitter’s business is that it may have found a steady source of revenue from the deals inked with both Google and Bing. Up until now business analysts have been skeptical of how long Twitter could maintain its forward progress without using ads from vendors on its site to generate stable revenue. Now that it is receiving a steady stream of capital from the two giants in the search engine industry it looks like Twitter will be able to strengthen its market share and enhance its services. This should foster new innovation and competition in the social networking niche of the Internet that can be taken advantage of by businesses looking for new media outlets.

This new type of search provides attractive opportunities for businesses in that they will be able to convey real time information to a much broader audience than if they were using regular search engines alone. For example, vacationers at a beach resort can tweet about the current weather conditions and their experiences at the resort while they are actually there. If a user is searching for a vacation spot they can get that in-depth real time information by people who are actually there instead of just a flat marketing site or a room rate from a standard search. This gives them the ability to make more informed decisions by getting reviews from people that they already trust who are inside their social networking circle.

The type of information generated from Twitter could be extremely useful to report weather conditions, stock quotes, breaking sports news, and many other types of time sensitive information. It also can be a great way of broadcasting news and information directly from laptops and cell phones. Twitter represents the masses and gives everyone a voice instead of information influenced by the media, politicians, and personalities that can manipulate information to suit their purposes and agendas. It lets the user drill down to the micro level of news.

Businesses can take advantage of the type of information that Twitter provides in order to reach out to customers on a larger scale. Searchers can see information about businesses that standalone marketing pages can’t convey. Since the information is coming directly from other real people inside the searcher’s own networking circle the information is much more reliable. This would be great for reviews of services provided by businesses and give them a stronger outlet to represent themselves and give a more in depth explanation of what they offer. This is only the beginning and these types of technology partnerships could prove to provide many new opportunities for businesses to increase their exposure to markets and customers.

Yahoo! Announces End of Paid Inclusion

October 19, 2009

Yahoo! has announced that they will drop their paid inclusion offering at the conclusion of 2009.

This comes after much speculation as to whether the program would continue following the Microsoft/Bing merger in addition to the controversy around whether or not paid search results belong inside of the organic list. Instead of continuing the paid inclusion program, Yahoo! will be focusing resources upon enhancing their search advertising program through increased relevancy, ROI, and rich ad targeting.

They have made the announcement now so that they can help transition clients off of the program by the end of the year.

5 Questions to Ask SEO Companies

June 24, 2009

The field of search engine optimization (SEO) contains companies with varying skill levels and capabilities. SEO consulting practices differ from one SEO company to another. Hiring an SEO company who uses optimal SEO practices can make the difference between high search engine rankings and not being found in the search results. If you are marketing a website or are responsible for reviewing SEO companies for your business, you cannot afford to overlook this information. Read this article and you will find the top 5 SEO questions to consider before hiring an SEO company for your business.

  1. What websites have you worked on before?
  2. Can I call your references?
  3. What do you think of my website?
  4. What techniques will you use to increase traffic volume?
  5. What can you guarantee?

What websites have you worked on before? A good SEO company should have worked on a few dozen websites at bare minimum. Every website has its own degree, and a solid SEO company will have come across unique challenges with each website.

Can I call your references? It is not uncommon for SEO customers to demand non-disclosure agreements. However, there are generally a few people who are willing to be called as a reference, especially if the consultant delivered substantially good work.

What do you think of my website? Some SEO companies will not look at your website without getting paid first. If someone is proposing an SEO job without at least looking through your website structure, you can put them at the bottom of the list of potential SEO companies. Almost any good SEO company would point out obvious SEO impediments before submitting a proposal. You shouldn’t expect to get in-depth optimization advice for free, but if your consultant did not mention a major obstacle, it is always possible that he or she did not notice it, which is a red flag in itself.

What techniques will you use to increase traffic volume? Will they make changes to your existing website coding or will they just be adding or revising meta tags? Will they be performing SEO copywriting and editing to add relevant keywords to your visible page text? Will they be adding new pages, or possibly redesigning your navigation to make it more search engine friendly? Make them define their successful SEO practices and methods.

What can you guarantee? If an SEO company is offering high-ranking guarantees – how is that possible when no one can control or influence the search websites? Even Google’s own published guidelines states: “No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google. Beware of SEO companies that claim to guarantee rankings, or that claim a “special relationship” with Google, or that claim to have a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google.”
